UN Ocean Decade

Implementing Partner

In early 2024, EuroGOOS was officially endorsed as a UN Ocean Decade Implementing Partner (DIP). This recognition highlights EuroGOOS’ central role in advancing sustained and coordinated ocean observations in Europe and globally, contributing directly to the ambitions of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030).

The EuroGOOS DIP work plan was developed together with our members during the May 2024 General Assembly and subsequently approved by the EuroGOOS Board in Autumn 2024. This collaborative approach ensures that the plan reflects the collective priorities of the EuroGOOS community and aligns with the strategic objectives of the Ocean Decade.

Reporting and Coordination

As an Implementing Partner, the EuroGOOS Office reports annually to the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC UNESCO). In addition, the Office participates in bi-monthly coordination meetings with the Decade Coordination Office for Ocean Observing (DCO-OO) to ensure alignment, foster synergies, and advance implementation.

Scientists for Ocean Literacy – UN Ocean Decade Project

Our Scientists for Ocean Literacy project aims to inspire scientists to work closer with public and educators, embrace the diversity of disciplines linked to our ocean and inclusiveness in knowledge and innovation. This project will help us exchange best practice and promote blue careers. Scientists for Ocean Literacy will empower scientists as ocean advocates to their communities, countries, and regions, and help transform ocean knowledge into actions for sustainability.
