EOOS, the coordinating framework

for European ocean observing

The European Ocean Observing System (EOOS) is the infrastructure, platforms, sensors and people that gather the required data and information about Europe’s ocean, seas and coastal waters to meet these needs. The development of EOOS is guided via the EOOS Framework, consisting of a governance structure – Steering Group, Operations Committee, Resource Forum and Advisory Committee – with engagement from across the European ocean observing community, as well as national and European policymakers, funders and other stakeholders. EuroGOOS Chairs the EOOS Steering Committee, the body providing the overall strategic direction of EOOS.

The current EOOS Strategy 2023-2027 “Advancing EOOS – the foundation of European ocean knowledge” sets out a Vision and Mission, along with three high-level objectives towards realising a fully implemented and operational EOOS. The accompanying Roadmap for Implementation defines several activities to co-design EOOS, and prepare from an implementation phase in the next strategic period.

EuroGOOS is a partner in several project consortia that are contributing to the EOOS Roadmap for Implementation, such as AMRIT which will establish an EOOS Technical Support Centre to sustain various tools and services developed during the project.

The development of EOOS is a key activity for the EuroGOOS community, as reflected in the 10th EuroGOOS International Conference Statement in 2023.
